Fostering a Strong Scientific Community in Canada
This is great news for Canada's scientific community, though I think it's important that we keep in mind the unique way that new scientific talent contributes to scientific advancement and technological innovation. Those that make the most novel contributions to scientific understanding are by and large younger researchers - after 1915, for instance, Einstein made little positive contributions to physics, despite revolutionizing it in his younger years. If we want Canada to have a strong scientific community, we need to not only attract proven researchers; we also need to provide opportunities for young up-and-comers to undertake basic research, in all fields of research. These foreign researchers also need capable and motivated graduate students to assist in their research - without providing significant funding for graduate and post-doctoral studies in addition to these distinguished positions, Canada's science community will not be nearly as strong as it could be.
