The bad news just got worse: A new study finds that reining in greenhouse gas emissions in time to avert serious changes to Earth's climate will be at best extremely difficult. Current goals for reducing emissions fall far short of what would be needed to keep warming below dangerous levels, the study suggests. To succeed, we would most likely have to reverse the rise in emissions immediately and follow through with steep reductions through the century. Starting later would be far more expensive and require unproven technology.

A geological survey team set out mid-August to crush their way through the last untrammelled regions of the Arctic, mapping the sea floor as they go. But there's far more at stake than just a geological survey: it may be the last chance for Canada to collect the high-resolution data the country needs to stake a claim to a ridge along the Arctic sea floor—and the potential natural resources it holds.

A group of 500 scientists has just released the first-ever assessment* of the status of ecosystems in the United Kingdom, evaluating their ability to provide food, sustain biodiversity, and perform many other services. The overall conclusion: Some 30% of these ecosystem functions are currently declining.
