Dr. Philip Schwab, Ph.D. Vice President of Industry Relations


Biography:
As Vice-President for Industry Relations at BIOTECanada, Phil is responsible for policy
development for the Health Advisory Board, Agriculture and Nutrition Advisory Board and the
Vaccine and Industrial Biotechnology Committees. Phil works with member companies to
develop industry-wide responses to government initiatives and to communicate industry
priorities to federal decision makers. Phil also serves as a member of the Multi-Sector Advisory
Committee for the Pan-Provincial Vaccine Enterprise (PREVENT).
Prior to joining BIOTECanada, Phil served as Director of Programs at Genome Canada, where he
coordinated the scientific review processes for competitive programs across the spectrum of
genomics and proteomics research.
For over 6 years, Phil served as a Science Policy and Legislative Affairs Advisor at the US
Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC where he was responsible for developing research
and education policies and programs related to agricultural biotechnology, food safety, and
natural resources. Prior to his appointment at USDA, Phil was a professional staff member on the
US Senate Committee on Agriculture for Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa, and a Legislative Aide in
the Offices of Representative Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota and Senator Tom Daschle of South
Dakota.
Dr. Schwab holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Plant Breeding and Genetics with a minor in conservation
biology from the University of Minnesota and a B.S. degree from Michigan State University.
