The conference will be held virtually through the week of November 16th – 20th\, 2020.In the time of social distancing and with abundance of caution\, we are excited to bring this year’s conference right to your offices and homes! CSPC has a rich history of hosting exciting in-person conferences. Expect no less from the virtual conference experience! \nWhat to expect from a virtual conference: \nCSPC 2020 will feature a week-long variety of engaging and informative online sessions including panel discussions\, workshops\, live interviews\, online networking opportunities\, and even virtual exhibitions. Registered participants will have the opportunity to watch sessions live and on-demand. SUMMARY:Voice and Agency: Women in Science\, Health and Policy
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Imogen R. Coe is a professor of Chemistry and Biology at Ryerson University and an affiliate scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital inToronto. She is an academic scientist and former academic leader being the founding dean of the Faculty of Science at Ryerson from 2012-2018. She is currently the President of the Canadian Molecular Biosciences Society and sits on various boards including the Michael Garron Hospital and Science Rendezvous. In addition to her work as a research scientist\, Dr. Coe is an award-winning advocate and activist in Canada with respect to the integration of principles of inclusion\, diversity\, equity and accessibility (IDEA) particularly into research cultures in academic science\, research and medicine. She acts as a consultant to various research intensive organizations and also advises academia\, government and industry on the best practices towards creating cultures of care and inclusive excellence in science.  \nDr. Cara Tannenbaum is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at the Université de Montréal and an international expert in Sex and Gender-Based Analysis. She holds positions as the Departmental Science Advisor to Health Canada and is also the Scientific Director of the Institute of Gender and Health for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. \nDr. Janni Aragon\, she/her/hers\, is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Political Science at the University of Victoria. She has taught courses on American Politics\, Political Theory\, Gender and Politics\, Feminist Theory\, Gender and International Relations\, Model United Nations Simulation\, Internship in Political Science\, as well as numerous Women’s Studies courses at the University of Victoria and San Diego State University. Dr. Aragon was the 2011-13 Chair of the Academic Women’s Caucus at UVic. In this capacity\, Aragon represents all women faculty and librarians at all equity\, diversity\, and human rights meetings. She also sits on the Senate in the Learning and Teaching Committee. \nProfessor Alice B. Aiken\, CD\, PhD\, MSc\, BScPT\, BSc\, is the Vice President – Research & Innovation at Dalhousie University in  Halifax\, Canada. Her research focuses on health systems transformation and evidence informed policy-making with a focus on military and Veterans. Dr. Aiken is currently the Vice  Chair of the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Chair of the board of Research Nova Scotia. \nDr. El Chenier\, they/them\, is a historian of gender\, sexuality\, race\, and colonization at Simon Fraser University where she also serves as president of Academic Women. In their recently released report Radical Inclusion: Equity and Diversity for Female Faculty at Simon Fraser University\, they argue that equity work means practicing an ethic of care in solidarity across difference. They currently train scholars and administrators in these principles and methods in action-oriented presentations and workshops.  \nDr. Taima Moeke-Pickering is a Maori of the Ngati Pukeko and Tuhoe tribes. She is a full professor in the School of Indigenous Relations at Laurentian University where she teaches courses on Indigenous research methodologies\, international Indigenous issues\, and United Nations and Indigenous social work. She has extensive experience working with international Indigenous communities\, evaluative research\, big data analysis\, and photovoice methodologies.  She is co-editor of the book Decolonizing & Indigenizing Education in Canada (2020) and lead editor for the book Critical Reflections and Politics for Advancing Women in the Academy (2020).

This involves leadership in developing and advancing S&T priorities\, providing strategic policy advice on horizontal science issues and opportunities to ensure strong linkages between science and policy communities\, and promoting effective engagement of S&T activities.  He is additionally responsible for accelerating the creative application of innovative digital technologies including Artificial Intelligence\, to enhance NRCan’s ability to conduct research and analysis\, as well as provide evidence-based policy advice that is supported by advanced analytical techniques. He works with counterparts from other science-based organizations to ensure that the management of federal policy and research activities support and align with Government of Canada priorities.

DESCRIPTION:PanelistsShweta Ganapati joined NSERC as Mitacs Canadian Science Policy Fellow in 2020. She has since been working on a broad range of policy priorities at NSERC as well as taking on key international files including the European Union and Germany. Before joining NSERC\, Shweta served as program manager at the Canadian Science Policy Centre (CSPC\, 2019-20) and research scientist at a Maryland based biotech start-up\, SD Nanosciences (2017-19). Shweta holds a PhD in Organic and Analytical Chemistry from University of Maryland\, USA and a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from St. Stephen’s College\, University of Delhi\, India. As a science policy fellow\, she aims to apply her scientific training to serve society through supporting scientific discovery and innovation. \nUzma Urooj has a PhD in Cognitive Neuroimaging from University of York\, UK and BSc Honors in Neuroscience and Linguistics from University of Toronto\, Canada. Following her PhD training\, Uzma gained professional experiences in research management\, technology transfer and subsequently science policy. She currently works as Senior Advisor\, Science Strategies at Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Intimately involved at the interface of science and policy\, Uzma is passionate about raising the bar for research excellence and improving the training and development of Canadian highly qualified individuals affiliated with science.  \nLisa Chen Obrist started at the CFI in 2015 as a Programs Officer and subsequently joined the Performance\, Analytics and Evaluation team as a Senior Evaluation Analyst in 2016.  After working for several years on Parliament Hill she returned to graduate studies and completed a PhD at the University of Toronto in the history and philosophy of medieval science and medicine. In 2009\, she started working at the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and held various roles in the Corporate Strategy and Performance Division as well as the Research Grants and Partnerships Division. Lisa holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from McGill University in History and Italian Studies. \nFrançois Pelletier holds a PhD in History from the University of Montreal and Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne. His research focuses on the relationship between governments and businesses\, the formulation of energy policies\, and international relations. He recently published a book on the founder and first president of the French company and oil giant: Total. Since completing his PhD\, François has published and participated in conferences on different subjects linked to economic history such as government regulations\, trade policy\, strategic planning\, and natural resources. After working as an editor and writer\, he finished a research fellowship at the Management Department of HEC Montréal. This position was the first opportunity to link past and present and to start thinking about mobilizing knowledge to tackle current issues facing governments and companies.

DESCRIPTION:Rob Annan\, President and CEO\n\nAs President and CEO of Genome Canada\, Dr. Annan drives an overarching strategy that promotes the value and potential of genomics in Canada to key stakeholders\, while raising the public profile of Genome Canada both nationally and internationally. He previously served as Genome Canada’s Vice-President of Public Affairs and Communications.  \nAs an innovation strategist and a strong communicator\, Dr. Annan consults with governments\, organizations\, and institutions across Canada on research strategy and speaks regularly with public and private audiences across Canada. As Fellow of the Public Policy Forum\, he has led projects and convened discussions around Canadian research and innovation policy. During seven years at Mitacs\, Dr. Annan helped build a Canadian success story in the development and delivery of policy-driven innovation programs in his role as Chief Research Officer. \nFor several years\, Dr. Annan volunteered on the Board of Directors for Let’s Talk Science\, a national charity dedicated to increasing STEM literacy among K-12 students. He has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from McGill University and undergraduate degrees in English from Queen’s University and in Biology from the University of Victoria.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HEREDr. Alejandro Adem\nPresident\, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) \nProfessor Alejandro Adem recently started in a new role as President of NSERC. As a highly accomplished researcher in the field of mathematics and a faculty member at the University of British Columbia\, he has significant leadership experience in research and innovation. Before joining NSERC\, he was CEO and Scientific Director of Mitacs. \nAt Mitacs\, Professor Adem oversaw an unprecedented expansion of its programs\, with the goal of delivering 10\,000 internships annually across Canada and abroad. He worked closely with stakeholders to launch the Mitacs Canadian Science Policy Fellowship in 2016 and established an Indigenous engagement initiative. \nHe has served on a variety of scientific\, editorial\, and governance boards for the worldwide mathematical sciences community\, including the Advisory Board for the Association for Women in Mathematics and the International Mathematical Union’s Committee for Women in Mathematics.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sarah Gallagher \nProfessor\, Physics and Astronomy\, Western University \nScience Advisor to the President of the Canadian Space Agency \nDr. Sarah  Gallagher is the Science Advisor to the President of the Canadian Space Agency where she is the liaison to the space science community and the Chief Science Advisor of Canada.  She has been a professor of physics and astronomy at Western University since 2008\, and her research focuses on supermassive black holes and galaxies.  Dr. Gallagher teaches first-year physics and regularly talks to the public about astronomy and space science. \nDr. Pascal Michel \nChief Science Officer\, Official languages champion\, Office of the Chief Science Officer\, Public Health Agency of Canada \nDr. Pascal Michel is the Chief Science Officer of the Public Health Agency of Canada. In this role\, he is mainly responsible for overseeing and leading excellence and innovation in Agency science as well as to provide corporate leadership on science-policy issues. \nPrior to his current responsibilities\, Dr. Michel completed a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine (University of Montreal)\, a Master in Preventive Veterinary Medicine (University of California) and a Ph.D. in epidemiology (University of Guelph). He joined the federal public service in 1997 as a senior epidemiologist and then directed the Public Health Risk Sciences division of the National Microbiology Laboratory before serving as a senior science advisor to the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Branch. \nDr. Michel held various cross-appointments with the academia and developed a publications record as author and editor of many scientific communications along with strong collaborations across Canada and internationally. In that regard\, he cofounded a multi-sectoral research centre on zoonotic diseases and decision sciences\, and built long lasting relationships at the United Nations in relation to the role of space technologies to improve global health outcomes. \nDr. Vik Pant \nChief Scientist and Chief Science Advisor\, Natural Resources Canada \nVik is responsible for providing strategic direction to build capacity within NRCan’s scientific community\, promoting a departmental vision for S&T and assessment of future needs. This involves leadership in developing and advancing S&T priorities\, providing strategic policy advice on horizontal science issues and opportunities to ensure strong linkages between science and policy communities\, and promoting effective engagement of S&T activities. \nVik earned a doctorate from the Faculty of Information (iSchool) in the University of Toronto\, a master’s degree in business administration with distinction from the University of London\, and a master’s degree in information technology from Harvard University\, where he received the Dean’s List Academic Achievement Award. \nVik joined NRCan from the MaRS Discovery District\, a technology start-up accelerator in Toronto\, where he was a Senior Technical Advisor of Applied Artificial Intelligence. Prior to that\, he held progressively strategic positions in leading software enterprises including Oracle\, SAP and Open Text. \nDr. Shawn Marshall \nProfessor\, Department of Geography\, University of Calgary \nDepartmental Science Advisor\, Environment and Climate Change Canada \nShawn Marshall is a glaciologist and climatologist at the University of Calgary\, where he held the Canada Research Chair in Climate Change from 2007-2017. His research examines glacier-climate processes and glacier response to climate change\, including implications for water resources and global sea level rise. Dr. Marshall currently represents Canada as the Cryosphere Working Group lead to the International Arctic Science Committee and as a member of the Science Leadership Council of the international Mountain Research Initiative. Since 2019\, Dr. Marshall has been seconded with the federal government\, where he is serving as the Departmental Science Advisor at Environment and Climate Change Canada.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bonnie Schmidt\, CM\, FRSC\, ICD.D\, Founder & President\, Let’s Talk Science\n@BMSchmidt  \nDr. Bonnie Schmidt is the founder and president of Let’s Talk Science\, a national education charity that she started in 1991 while completing her graduate studies in Physiology. Let’s Talk Science supports youth engagement in science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) engagement. The organization serves youth\, educators and volunteers\, engaging an estimated million people since its inception.  An active volunteer herself\, Bonnie currently serves on the Genome Canada Board of Directors. She is also a member of the Federal Government’s AI Public Awareness Working Group and committees for several national and international organizations. For her efforts in education and youth development\, Bonnie has received more than a dozen awards\, including an Honorary Degree from Ryerson University. She was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2015 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2018. \nDr. Naveed Aziz\, CEO\, CGen\n@DNAziz_ \nDr. Naveed Aziz serves as CEO of CGEn\, Canada’s national platform for genome sequencing & analysis\, with nodes at The Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto)\, McGill University (Montréal) and Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre (Vancouver). Dr. Aziz leadership has enabled CGEn to fuel Canadian research and innovation\, playing a key role in the advancement of technological developments within the field of genomics. He is passionate about the development of powerful and efficient solutions for big data generation\, storage and deposition to “open-science” databases\, enabling high-speed data exchange at national and international scale. Dr. Aziz is servers on numerous national & international scientific advisory committees. Dr. Aziz holds a PhD in Gene Targeting from University of Dundee\, UK\, in addition to an MPhil in Biotechnology and an Executive MBA from Bradford School of Management\, UK. His previous roles include serving as the Director of Technology programs at Genome Canada\, Head of Genomics at University of York\, UK and as Research Fellow at the Noble Research Institute\, USA. \nRachael Maxwell (she/her)\, Executive Director\, Evidence for Democracy\n@RachAelCMaxwell \nRachael Maxwell joins Evidence for Democracy with a deep knowledge of the science landscape in Canada and a strong track record of success working at national not-for-profit research organizations. From 2018-21 she held progressively responsible roles at Genome Canada\, working across the organization on key priorities in communications\, public affairs and strategic planning. Previously\, Rachael worked at Mitacs on the Canadian Science Policy Fellowship where she managed the design and delivery of the program from its inception through its first three cohorts. Rachael is also a member of the Board of the Directors at the Science and Policy Exchange. Rachael is passionate about working at the intersection of science\, society and policy. She speaks to diverse audiences at home and abroad about the need to improve the mechanisms that connect science and policy. Rachael also brings years of experience working in arts management and an academic background in cultural studies. \nDr. Shawn McGuirk. Internal Director and Past President\, Science & Policy Exchange \n@ShawnMcGuirk \nShawn McGuirk is a Senior Policy Advisor at the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)\, and is an alumnus of both the Mitacs Canadian Science Policy Fellowship program and the Recruitment of Policy Leaders program of the Public Service Commission of Canada. During his PhD at the Goodman Cancer Research Centre of McGill University\, his research centered on the role of metabolism in cancer progression. As a long-standing director and past president of the student-led non-profit organization Science & Policy Exchange\, Shawn is committed to capacity building in science policy and to elevating the voices of the next generation as key stakeholders in policy discussions. He is also a member of the board of directors of Acfas\, a non-profit organization that promotes research\, innovation\, and scientific culture in the francophone community.
