Karen Gill is the Director in the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Branch and has been with the Ministry of Education since 2006. Prior to coming to the ministry, Karen served in the public education sector for 32 years as a secondary school teacher, department head, and secondary school and board administrator. Since joining the ministry she has had responsibility for the ongoing review and renewal of Ontario’s curriculum and assessment policy, K to 12, the development and implementation of the ministry’s Environmental Education Policy Framework, the Financial Literacy Education initiative, the new secondary curriculum in Equity Studies, and the development and implementation of enhanced learning for all Ontario students about First Nations, Metis and Inuit histories, perspectives, cultures and issues. Most recently, the ministry is working with partners and the education sector to transform learning and teaching enabled by technology, building on Ontario’s eLearning strategy and 21st Century Innovation Research projects currently underway in all district school boards. Transformation of teaching and learning through renewal of curriculum content grounded in global competencies and innovative pedagogical practices enabled by technology are key elements of Achieving Excellence – Ontario’s vision for education – and a prime focus now and going forward.
