Land Use: National Framework for a Grand Challenge
Connected Conference Theme: Grand Challenges
As Canada plans to grow to a nation of 100 million (Century Initiative), we should consider a national framework on to meet the needs of this growing population. We know how the current housing crises has been created because of restrictive land use policies in the provinces and the cities. How do we project the land use so that we can have a coherent policy on immigration and population growth and avoid crisis such as the current housing crisis. In addition, Canada produces and exports billions of dollars of plant and animal food products, and minerals and we need to consider how much of our land will be brought under plant and animal agriculture to meet the global demand for food and energy for the growing population. Because of the growing understanding of relationships between animal, human and environmental health with land being the common denominator, we should consider the land use as an integral part of our health policy. Therefore, it is critical we stimulate discussion on creation of a national land use framework and have provincial and city land use policies speaking to that framework.
