Dr. Shohini Ghose
Professor, Wilfrid Laurier University
Impact Statement: From quantum computing to the first national survey of EDI in the physics community to TED talks in science communication, Dr. Sohini Ghose is a trailblazer and leader in STEM. Her 2023 book: Her Space, Her Time, won the 2023 Science Writers and Communicators of Canada Award.
Dr. Ghose has built a number of unique, high-impact initiatives in her many roles. She launched the Centre for Women in Science (WinS) – that connects scientists and engineers with EDI scholars to build interdisciplinary, research-backed actions for change. This trailblazing is felt through intersectional EDI research, facilitating networking, supporting conferences and collaborations, and building novel approaches for communication and public engagement. It has also been the venue for the development of unique projects like the WinS national and international photo exhibit series that used powerful research-based visuals communicating research-based data about sexism in science.
Dr. Ghose also helped to develop the $360M National Quantum Strategy – which is fueling R&D and cementing Canada’s place as a global leader in quantum technologies. She continues to shape the Canadian quantum ecosystem as one of the 11 members of the national Quantum Advisory Council advising ISED. An impact that will continue to be felt in the future.
In addition to her popular TED talks, invited presentations, and her well-reviewed books, she has reached a global audience through interviews and appearances in the media, including BBC, CBC, Nova, NPR, Telegraph and more, collectively engaging and educating millions around the globe. A true multidisciplinary trailblazer, her continued impact will continue to shape the quantum computing, science communication, and equity-driven research ecosystem.
Bio: Shohini Ghose wanted to be an explorer like Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian astronaut. She hasn’t made it to space yet, but she did become an explorer of the quantum world as a physics Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University and CTO of the Quantum Algorithms Institute in Canada. She is an award-winning quantum physicist and author who has made foundational contributions to quantum science and communication with applications in finance, cybersecurity and healthcare. She serves on Canada’s Quantum Advisory Council for the $360M National Quantum Strategy, and was a member of the Advisory Board of UNESCO’s International Basic Science Program. As founding Director of the Laurier Centre for Women in Science, Shohini is an internationally recognized leader in equity and inclusion in STEM. She holds one of five NSERC Chairs for Women in Science and Engineering in Canada, and her recent book on women scientists, Her Space, Her Time, won the 2023 Science Writers and Communicators of Canada Award. A TED Senior Fellow and in-demand speaker, Shohini’s talks have received over 10 million views online. She was elected to the College of the Royal Society of Canada in 2017 and is a past President and Fellow of the Canadian Association of Physicists. She still dreams of going to space.
