Challenges and Opportunities: Scientific Research and Publication in French in Canada
Introduction:
On the occasion of Francophonie Day, March 20, the CSPC is pleased to announce its first Francophone editorial series on the role of French as a language of research in Canada.
The CSPC Francophile Committee invites you to submit editorials and share your reflections on the challenges and opportunities related to conducting and publishing scientific research in French in Canada. We also encourage you to explore potential solutions to promote the mobilization of scientific knowledge in French.
Suggested Themes:
- Emerging challenges and opportunities for research and publication in French in Canada.
- The potential impact of a pan-Canadian strategy to support scientific efforts in French (Recommendation 5, see below).
- Mechanisms to enhance the mobilization and dissemination of scientific knowledge in French (Recommendations 11 to 16, which address issues related to publications and communications, see below).
- Realities and constraints faced by Francophone minority communities in conducting scientific research.
This initiative is inspired by the 5th report of the Standing Committee on Science and Research of the House of Commons, tabled in June 2023 and adopted by the House in March 2024. The report highlights the current state of the French language in the scientific field, the challenges faced by Francophone scientists in Canada, particularly those in minority communities, and presents 17 recommendations aimed at encouraging research and publication in French.
Among these recommendations, the development of a pan-Canadian strategy to support scientific research and publication in French (Recommendation 5) stands out as a key step to improving the visibility and impact of French in science across the country.
