Canada is in the midst of a radical transformation to ensure Canadians’ safety and security. Climate emergencies, geopolitical instability, misinformation, social fragmentation, Arctic and Northern vulnerabilities, and pressures on public institutions all point to the need for a broader whole-of-society approach to defence and resilience. Community non-profits are a key part of Canada’s resilience infrastructure. They support vulnerable populations, mobilize volunteers, respond to crises, serve veterans and military families, operate in remote and Northern communities, and hold trusted relationships that governments and formal institutions may not always have. Yet their role in and contributions to Canada’s defence and security ecosystem remains unexamined and underutilized.
