The ocean plays an important role in removing carbon from the atmosphere, making it a vital resource in the fight against climate change. Promoting the health of ocean ecosystems that take up and store carbon in its tissues is a type of a nature-based climate solution (NbCS). The carbon that is stored in these ecosystems is called “blue carbon” and certain ecosystems like salt marshes, mangroves, kelp forests and seagrass meadows are excellent at storing blue carbon. These blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs) are under threat by human activity such as coastal development. Despite the threats to these carbon-sequestering ecosystems, there is currently no plan in Canada dedicated to the protection or restoration of BCEs. This lack of a specific plan is a major gap in Canadian climate action and marine policy. To fill this gap, I am proposing the creation of a nationwide Blue Carbon Strategy that will specifically target protection of BCEs as well as create the foundation for a blue carbon market. This policy will help to create funding incentive and opportunities for restoration projects while also conserving existing BCEs so that Canada can progress towards its net-zero climate goal.
